Celebrating 50 Years of Kiln

On 12 July 1962, Robert Kiln and his two business partners put £5,000 of their own personal wealth together and founded a small, niche underwriting syndicate at Lloyd's of London.

Their partnership was founded on core values of integrity, excellence, empowerment, accountability and innovation, all of which helped establish Kiln as a business to be both trusted and respected.

This year sees Kiln celebrating its 50th anniversary. As one of the longest established insurers at Lloyd's, it is with great pride that we acknowledge how Kiln has developed.

Now writing more than £1bn in annual premium and backed by one of the world's largest insurance groups, Kiln has grown into a truly global company, protecting clients in more than 200 countries and extending its presence into many territories that would have been unimaginable 50 years ago.

Today we have four syndicates at Lloyd's, which write a diverse portfolio of specialist risks including property & special lines, reinsurance, marine & special risks, enterprise risk, aviation, accident & health and life.

We are in a position of considerable strength as we celebrate our 50th year and 2012 promises to be exciting for all of us, and we plan to celebrate it through a series of events which we will share with our peers and those who have supported us for the past five decades.

Turning 50 is also an opportunity for us to look back, not with complacency, but with a deep sense of gratitude and in recognition of the opportunities that we have been afforded over our many years, and to look at areas where the past 50 years have been less kind.

To commemorate this milestone, we have decided to sponsor a groundbreaking marathon in Makeni, Sierra Leone on 9 June 2012, in support of the British charity, Street Child of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year following 50 years of independence and is still recovering from the effects of a brutal civil war which left thousands of children alone and having to fend for themselves by living and working on the streets. The Kiln Sierra Leone Marathon will provide a desperately needed financial boost to enable the charity to build 50 schools, reunite 500 girls and 500 boys with their families, and support 5,000 impoverished street children through education. The funds raised will help to empower the people of Sierra Leone to help themselves and develop their economy, ensuring that future generations suffer less hardship and turmoil.
